چکیده مقاله:

Background & Aims: Visceral leishmaniosis (VL) is a sporadic disease in many provinces of Iran, while it is considered endemic in other parts. This study was designed to assess the seroprevalence of canine VL in the Kerman city. Methods: Samples were randomly selected from the referred household dogs to the veterinary hospital of Shahid Bahonar university, Kerman, Iran and stray dogs, euthanized by Kerman municipality. Blood samples were taken after complete clinical examination. All collected sera were tested by a commercial indirect ELISA kit for the presence of anti Leishmania infantum antibodies. In addition, complete blood count tests were performed in all dogs to detect hematological alterations. Collected data were analyzed through SPSS software and using χ 2  and fishers’ exact tests. Results: The overall seroprevalence was 7.03%, which was calculated 11.1% in stray dogs. Seroprevalence of disease was significantly higher in dogs over 5 years old in comparison to younger dogs (P<0.01). Seroprevalence had no significant relationship with sex and hematological alterations. Conclusion: Although the seroprevalence of canine VL in Kerman city was less than that in endemic parts, stray dogs could be a potential risk factor for public health in this area. Further complementary ecological studies on vectors and reservoirs in different areas of Kerman province seem to be necessary.

Canine visceral leishmaniosis: first case in Zambia.

Visceral leishmaniosis was discovered in a male 12year-old Australian cattle dog in September 1994. Canine leishmaniosis has not previously been reported in Zambia. At necropsy, splenomegaly, fatty degeneration of the liver and focal lesions in the renal cortex were observed. Histopathologically, focal diffuse proliferation of amastigote-laden macrophages (ALM) were found in the spleen and live...

Neutrophil dysfunction varies with the stage of canine visceral leishmaniosis.

Canine visceral leishmaniosis (CVL) causes a dependent-stage alteration in neutrophil oxidative metabolism. When production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) exceeds the antioxidant capacity of neutrophils, apoptosis is triggered, impairing the viability and function of these cells, which can predispose dogs to infection. However, the uremic condition observed in late-stage CVL can also alter th...

Autoantibodies frequency in children with visceral leishmaniosis

Introduction The visceral leishmaniosis (VL), or Calazar, is a chronic severe systemic disease, potentially fatal to humans. Currently, VL is the prototype of a specific immune dysfunction resulting from parasitism of leishmania donovani in macrophages, producing a broad spectrum of clinical and immunological reversible only with specific treatment. Serum Analysis from infected adult patients d...

Epidemiological aspects of canine visceral leishmaniosis in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

An epidemiological study to examine the sero-prevalence of zoonotic visceral leishmaniosis (ZVL) among domestic and wild canines in endemic foci of Iran was carried out during 1999-2003 to assess the distribution of the disease and the possible association between infection in dogs, wild canines and people. Anti-leishmanial antibodies were detected by the direct agglutination test (DAT). Parasi...
